Debs Magazine
(1921-1923)
Introduction
The Debs Magazine began life in August 1921 as the Debs Freedom Monthly. Its primary goal was to secure freedom for Eugene V. Debs, who had been sentenced to ten years in prison for his opposition to World War I, and other political prisoners. Other causes championed by the journal included workers' rights, collective and democratic ownership of industry; and recognition of the Soviet government.
After Debs was pardoned and released from prison in December 1921 the journal was renamed Debs Magazine and it became a mouthpiece for the Socialist leader to espouse his views on a wide range of subjects. Its subtitle was "A Magazine of Militant Socialism" and its masthead bore the slogan "For a United Working Class on Every Front."
In 1923, Debs' health, which had been undermined during his prison years, took a turn for the worse, and he severely curtailed his activities. At this point, Debs Magazine came to an end.
