Russia and Germany: a century of conflict
Walter Laqueur
Weidenfeld, 45s
This is a banal study of the Hitler-Stalin period: e.g., Nazism was the result of a mass mental aberration on the part of the German people under the influence of an evil genius. Stalinism gets a similar explanation. Dotted amongst the clichés are occasional droppings of State Department philosophy such as the following comment on the Hitler-Stalin pact. ‘Communist and extreme left wing critics of Stalin are on weak ground: if they had moral or ideological scruples they had joined the wrong party in the first place’ (p.256). Not recommended.
