The United States and North Africa
Charles F. Gallagher
Harvard, 44s

Gallagher’s book, one of a series on US foreign policy, is mainly a survey of political and economic developments in North Africa since the war with a generous historical introduction. For its length (275 pages) but not its price it is a useful source-book and, unlike other books in the series, sees the USA playing a waiting game in the area, for some time at least confined mainly to providing aid for projects determined by the various governments. Morocco seems to be the US favourite, but Gallagher is worried that it cannot ‘broaden the support’ of its regime. And Algeria must gradually overcome its own problems before ‘normal’ relations can be established. Meanwhile the US has ‘outgrown the need to be “loved”.’ This interesting theme makes the book worth a brief inspection.
